I’ve collected some useful resources below for applied algebraic topology, math in general, grad school, and the MSU/Lansing area.

Topology

• A roadmap for the computation of persistent homology
• The Applied Algebraic Topology Research Network AATRN, especially their regular seminar and YouTube channel.
• Math Meetings

General math

• SIAM student travel awards
• AMS student travel awards
• AMS Math Research Communities (MRC) - a phenomenal avenue to start collaborations and investigate new research directions
• NSF Math Institutes - these 6 institutes each host workshops, conferences, and semester-long programs
  • Small teams can organize to meet via ICERM’s Collaborate@ICERM, AIM’s SQuaREs, IMSI’s Interdisciplinary Research Clusters, or IAS’s Summer Collaborators
• The National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB) hosts workshops and conferences similar to the NSF Math Institutes, with a focus on biological applications
• MathJobs and MathPrograms

Grad school

• Matt Might’s blog has a lot of advice articles on academia, like The illustrated guide to a Ph.D. and HOWTO: Get into grad school.

• Peter Feibelman’s A PhD Is Not Enough!: A Guide to Survival in Science was formative in me deciding to go to grad school. I recommend it to many people, despite the scary sounding title.

• Emily Roberts’s Personal Finance for PhDs is an amazing resource (particularly the podcast) for financial literacy specific to grad students and postdocs, like paying estimated taxes on fellowships and how to invest.

Math

• Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM)

• Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC) has a lot of resources for LGBTQ+ members of the community
• Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) includes free therapy
• Travel Funding
• Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) workshops and requirements
• Student Legal Services has free access to legal support
• Student Parent Resource Center (SPRC)

Financial-hardship resources:

• The Graduate Employees Union has a solidarity grant for financial hardships and additional tuition waivers
• Each College’s (NatSci) Associate Dean of Graduate Studies can get emergency resources to help students. Students should contact their department’s graduate program director for assistance first.
• Grad School Emergency Fellowship Funding
• The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) has multiple emergency funding resources
• MSU Student Food Bank
• Council of Graduate Students (COGS) Interest-free short term loans

Lansing/East Lansing

• Choose Lansing centralizes a lot of tourism and event information
• Lansing Foodies has lists of the best food, along with an active Facebook Group with over 75,000 members

• City of East Lansing Community Events including a Jazz Festival and Art Festival
